We are particularly interested in biological membranes and proteins. But how do you define those? Turns out, details matter for the answer!<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_d4_element et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_accordion_item_1  et_pb_toggle_close\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Stiffened bilayers<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content clearfix\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.phys.cmu.edu\/deserno\/publications#10.1063\/5.0028255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/research.phys.cmu.edu\/deserno\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/07\/PT-2021-JCP-154-014704.png\" width=\"100\" style=\"float: left;padding: 0px 10px 0px 0px\" \/><\/a>Beyond a certain stress asymmetry lipid membranes become stiffer. This could be related to the formation of finite gel domains in the compressed leaflet.<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_d4_element et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_accordion_item_2  et_pb_toggle_close\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">DNA origami on membranes<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content clearfix\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.phys.cmu.edu\/deserno\/publications#10.1063\/5.0027022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/research.phys.cmu.edu\/deserno\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/07\/PT-2020-APLBioEng-4-041507.png\" width=\"100\" style=\"float: left;padding: 0px 10px 0px 0px\" \/><\/a>You can build 3D nanostructures with molecular precision using DNA, and you can attach anchors to those that would bind them to lipid membranes. Here we review how this is done, and what applications this makes possible.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_d4_element et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_accordion_item_3  et_pb_toggle_close\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Asymmetric Cooke membranes<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content clearfix\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.phys.cmu.edu\/deserno\/publications#10.1021\/acs.jctc.0c00862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/research.phys.cmu.edu\/deserno\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/07\/PT-2020-JCTC-16-7195.png\" width=\"100\" style=\"float: left;padding: 0px 10px 0px 0px\" \/><\/a>Our widely used 3-bead solvent free lipid Cooke model is a very efficient way to simulate fluid elastic membranes. But it has one down side: lipids flip-flop too rapidly, which prevents us from simulating asymmetric membranes.
