Newton’s Cradle

This demonstration is appropriate for discussion of conservation of momentum and energy: Five identical steel balls on bifilar suspensions form an array of side-by-side pendulums. One or more of the balls are pulled back and allowed to collide with the remaining balls. If the collisions are elastic, the same number of balls will swing out from the other side and back again. Since the collisions are not perfectly elastic, the cycle does not repeat indefinitely, but gradually decays in amplitude, but the same number of balls continues to swing out from each end after each half-cycle.
