Interference of Sound Waves

Using an audio oscillator, 2 speakers are attached to the same output of the oscillator. However, one signal is first fed through a signal inverter switch which either passes the signal on unadulterated or changes the phase of the oscillation by 180 degrees. When the two are in phase and close together, a loud tone is heard. When the switch is then flipped, the signal falls to near zero due to the destructive interference of the two sources.
