Speed of Sound in a Metal Bar

This demonstration consists of an aluminum rod (approximately 180 cm in length), 2 microphones, an oscilloscope, and several short aluminum rods. The microphones located at each end of the rod are connected to an oscilloscope. The photo on the left shows the time delay between sound pulses when the pulse travels in air; the photo on the right shows a much smaller time delay (note the time scale in the picture!) when the pulse travels through aluminum.
