Eddy Current Pipe

A small permanent magnet with high strength-to-weight ratio (neodymium-iron-boron) is dropped through an aluminum pipe. Eddy currents induced in the pipe provide a drag force on the falling magnet. Student volunteers can be asked to use a stopwatch to measure the time for the magnet to fall through the pipe. A non-conducting pipe is provided for comparison. The aluminum pipe can also be cooled in liquid nitrogen, which reduces the electrical resistance, increasing the eddy currents and fall time.
