Double Slit Diffraction

A laser beam is directed through any of several slits to create a diffraction pattern on a projection screen. The demonstration may be done qualitatively simply to show the relation between slit separation and the angular position of the intensity maxima. Alternatively, by making measurements of the slit-to-screen distance and the position of the nth maximum relative to the central maximum, an experimental value for the laser wavelength, l, or the slit separation, d, may be determined according to the relation:

nl = dsinq
