Magnetic Torque on a Current Loop

A spool of wire connected to a DC current source is placed between the poles of a large permanent magnet. The coil is mounted on a set of bearings and is free to rotate under the influence of the magnetic torque. The apparatus can be used to illustrate the configurations of stable and unstable equilibrium (magnetic moment parallel and antiparallel to the external field) and of maximum torque (magnetic moment at 90º to the field).
