Positive and Negative Charge by Friction

Rubbing Plexiglas and silk (or rubber and fur) demonstrates that unlike materials become oppositely charged when rubbed together. The Plexiglas becomes positively charged and the rubber rod becomes negatively charged. The attraction and the repulsion of charges may be shown by mounting one of the rods on a needle bearing such that it is free to pivot about its center and bringing another charged rod near to it. On a dry day, it should also be possible to demonstrate that the silk or the fur are charged by bringing them near to the pivoting charged rod.
