Single Slit Diffraction

A laser beam is directed through any of several slits and the resulting diffraction pattern is observed on a projection screen. The qualitative version of this one is best demonstrated by using a continuously adjustable slit. An experimental value of the slit width, a, or the laser wavelength, l, may be determined according to the following equation:

n l = a sinq

by measuring the angular position of the nth dark fringe relative to the position of the central maximum.
