Solid-Liquid-Gas Transitions

Phase transitions are modeled by means of a collection of plastic beads in a slightly tilted vibrating frame on an overhead projector. At low temperature the beads arrange themselves in a hexagonal lattice with some defects. At higher temperature only short range order remains. At high temperature the system is a two-dimensional gas.
