The Monkey and the Hunter

A qualitative, yet dramatic, illustration of the independence of the two vector components of motion in a plane. A toy monkey (equipped with a bullet-proof vest) is suspended from an electromagnet at a height of about 3 meters above the floor. The current through the magnet is interrupted when a projectile (a 1/2″ ball bearing) passes through a light barrier at the muzzle of a blow-gun. The projectile strikes the monkey, provided that the gun is sighted directly on the monkey when fired and that the projectile is given sufficient initial velocity to reach the monkey before hitting the floor.
